Tom Macgurn
You've been playing solo recently. How different is it being by yourself than with your old band?
Really different, there's no safety net. You're open and bare, and what you have to bring is limited to what you personally can do, instead of utilizing and sharpening what talents others have. The plus side is you can really expand your own style without worrying about someone that has to follow you. So it's really freeing in that way.
You're lyrics are super deep and heart felt. A ton of people can relate.. where do you get your inspiration from?
ummm, life. I just try to be real with what I am going through. Whether good or difficult. It's one of my ways of dealing with life, not just going through things, but actually facing the issues and dealing with them.
Being a musician is tough, tell us about your early days.. sleeping in your car and stuff?
Well I still consider these the early days. But going back a little, I lived in my car to be able to spend all my time playing music and doing this ministry that I felt I was called to. Sometimes I smelled bad and my hair was greasy, but I loved it. It was right for the time.
Out of all the songs your have written, recorded, or played.. what is your personal favorite?
Whatever song I am writing at the time is usually my favorite. If I don't really like it, I won't spend my time working on it. That's a tough question though, it's easy to forget songs even when you really love them.
So you grew up in a musically talented family like most musicians.. what's up with your brother Dave?
My brother Dave, man I don't know if even he knows what's up with himself! He blows me away with how talented of a Script writer he is, but good luck in making money off of that any time soon.
Heard you are recording your first CD. Describe the trials you are experiencing at the moment. Do people really care?
Recording is great and stinks at the same time. To get it done professionally is expensive 15-20k for bare bones. If it's not done on top of the line equipment it lacks the emotional impact. Without being independently wealthy or willing to sell yourself to a label, it's a game of determination and patience
If people could only get one thing out of your music, what would you want them to experience?
The peace of God.
Tell us about surfing Big Rock with Ray and Matt during that bigger swell a few years back.
I can't really remember. Should I be embarrassed or proud? maybe neither. That's for sure one of my favorite waves, perhaps the place where I feel more comfortable than anywhere else. Although it can hurt you even when you're feeling good.
What is your dream gig?
Harvest Crusade probably, but I feel guilty that that's the first thing that came to my mind. Just because it's big. oh, oh, also a love song to my future wife.
Any last shout out or words to your fans?
Jesus loves you.
