Justin "Oldman" Tobey
First off how did you get the name "OLDMAN"?
My older brother was like Wayne from the Wonder Years, if you can remember that show. One of his friends thought I looked like an old man and he saw fit for everyone to know.
You grew up in Carlsbad but ran with a pretty tough crew. Are you still involved in that or have you exited?
I'm still friends with all of them. We still hang out every so often, but I try to keep my life as mellow as possible nowadays. We had some crazy times, fights, dramas, and drunken nights; but I wouldn't change that for the world. Your past only makes you stronger as long as you learn from it.
Tell us about your full sleeve tattoo on your left arm?
It's a work in progress but its a 14th century painting of the banishment of Lucifer and his rouge angels from heaven. I think i got it as a reminder of God's triumph over evil. In the constant struggles of life you always presented with choice, so when I question something, I just look down and I'm reminded theres always consequences to your choices.
How does your faith effect your life?
Wow thats deep... I didn't know we were going there. Well it effects it in multiple ways. One being the undying sense of peace in the unknown. I never worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about tomorrow, today has enough worries of its own. But most of all my faith is what keeps me going. Just the fact that this isn't it. There's more to life than the American dream or success and prosperity. That my humility in this life will be my riches in the next, if that makes sense?
Early influences in skating as a kid? Who is killing it nowadays?
The list is too long to name. Well earliest would be the bros of 80's Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen. Then to the so called new school legends like: Jamie Thomas, Kris Marcovich, Andrew Renoylds, Chad Knight, Mark Johnson, Laben Phidias, Danny Way... I could go on and on , but its hard to keep track nowadays. There are so many up and comers. Lil' rats that are turning pro by age 15. It's hard for me to keep up with it. The new generation is raising the bar beyond measure. I just try to have fun with my limits. Thats the beauty of skating its a very personal form of art.
You've been fishing a ton. Tell us about that.
Yeah, its one of my favorite pass times. Strictly bass fishing, catch and release. Its just one of those things that keeps you sane. Just like skate boarding when your doing it you just go to place in your mind where nothing else matters at that moment. All your cares disappear.
You met your girl over the internet and it seems to be working out quite fine. How did this happen?
Alright, I'll admit it I'm a computer nerd. But hey I'm a very social person and the night life used to be my social fix, but now that I'm trying not to party as much and mellow out I gotta find that fix. I started going into chat rooms on myspace and yahoo, thats where I met my girl. We connected so quick it was scary we met in person and the rest just fell into place. She's amazing. I love her to death.
Your brother is in the navy and cruises around on battleships all over the world. How do you feel about the war in Iraq and how has it affected your family?
Well I think we did the right thing taking Saddam out of power and letting the people of Iraq vote on their leadership. I think its dragged out a little longer than expected, but I have a few friends that are marines and have been over there multiple times and they all say that we are doing great things for the country such as building much needed schools, houses, and government facilities, to allow the country to survive and perhaps thrive. My brother is a helicopter mechanic for a seal unit. He's been out in the Philipeans and far away from the conflicts in Iraq. My mom stresses about him but hey, thats what moms do.
You were there when RXYM Fashion USA was born.. what can you say about the future of this company?
It's right in with the times. The company was made by people of this generation, that are actively involved with the surf and skate industries. Made by riders for riders. But most importantly ready to take on the future. Watch out RXYM is gonna blow up. Seriously well thought out clothing.
You play bass guitar pretty darn well and recently wrote and recorded some of your own music? Is that just for fun or you do you plan on making more?
For the most part its for fun. I mean don't get me wrong if someone came to me and said we like your music here is a contract, just sign here... I would be stupid not to. But music is just a part of my life. It always has been. I'm always making more. I call my project, "Alcatraz Devotion." You can check it out at: www.myspace.com/alcatrazdevotion.
Who influences your music and who are your favorite bands?
Well my music is kinda all over the place. I wouldn't say I sound like any one band. But most of my influences came from the post punk era of the 80's. All the fat records and epitaph bands. But my favorite band of all time is Bad Religion... Followed by, Boy Sets Fire.
Tell us about our dream trip.. Where have you always wanted to skate?
There so many places out there but if I could I'd love to take a trip up the coast of California, starting in San Diego and hitting all the major cities up to Oregon. California is the birth place of skateboarding so what better place to skate then home. But I would love to hit L.A., S.F., and some of the major parks in Oregon, Burnside and such.
Any departing words for the people out there? Any shout outs?
Well I'm not one to try and tell people how to live, but if I had to give any advice, life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you choose to react to it. You're never a product of your environment. You always have a choice at every moment. You're not always gonna choose right but learn from what you chose wrong. Shout outs: VOX Shoes (great skate shoes), McGill's Skate Shop Encinitas, CA (keeping the locals happy), Bass Pro Shop.. I wanna marry you, and most importantly Mr. Raymond Machado and Pala Indian reservation for giving me the opportunity to stay in Cali.
